Gunn History |
Gunn in the 1940's
The original Gunn was a one-room school built on this site in 1880. It had a capacity of 35 students and sat on an acre of ground that had been a part of the homestead of Levi Gunn. It closed in 1904 due to low enrollment.
Soon after the 1904 closing, a building boom occurred on North Broadway. The citizens circulated a petition and in 1925 a new four-room school was built. It served 140 students in grades K-8.
Growth in the neighborhood continued. In 1955 a two-room addition was completed. In 1957 the district purchased a neighboring home to add classroom space. In 1962, five more rooms were added to the school along a hallway to the north. Two "portable" classrooms arrived in the 70's and a multipurpose room was completed in 1981. Another portable was added in 1985, then two more appeared in 1996 then 1997.
