Mrs.
Miles, Salyers and Rounds first grade classes engaged in a study of bears.
The key understanding for students was that all living things have needs
and in particular that animals need, air, water, food, and shelter.
Frameworks
Objective: Know that animals need air, water, food, and shelter to survive.
The
students developed this understanding through the use of a webquest, "The
Bear Facts"
In
this webquest, students explored facts about black bears, grizzly bears,
and polar bears. When students were finished discovering facts, the teacher
did a shared reading of Winnie the Poohwith
the students projecting the story for the class to read using the LCD projector.
The students went online to read
Goldilocks
and the Three Bears,
an interactive story. The teacher also read other fiction books to the
students.
The
students created a Venn diagram to compare the fiction stories about bears
and the facts the authors used in these stories with the facts that students
learned about bears.
The
final project was for students to write, with a partner, their own fiction
bear story using at least two facts about bears. Students used Kidspiration
to make a web to guide them in writing their stories. The web included
a setting, characters and two facts about bears. After the graphic organizer
was completed, students composed stories in Student Writing Center and
added an illustration.
