Studio Art Program Gives Thomas Jefferson Student Great Opportunity

Kent Bellows Studio in Omaha has selected Thomas Jefferson freshman Tyler West as a participant in an after school art program. After a rigorous application and interview process, only about 10 students from the Omaha area are selected to participate. Those chosen will meet twice a week and work on both group and individual art projects, along side established artists in the area.  At the end of each semester, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts provides framing and finishing products for their art.  Students are able to sell their art while on exhibit in Omaha for a month.  Students get to keep about 60% of the profit.  Congratulations to Tyler West for this wonderful achievement!

Middle and High School Students to See New Report Card Feature:

21st Century Skills
Employability Scores

Middle and High School students and their parents should will notice a new report that lists an Employability Skills score for each class. This report is designed for students to understand the level at which they are demonstrating important 21st Century skills in each classroom and provide a good indicator of student work habits that could help or hinder classroom or workplace performance.

The four areas of 21st Century Employability skills and attributes that can affect success in and out of the classroom are:

  1. Participation
  2. Work completion
  3. Behavior
  4. Working with Others

Students receive scores on a scale of 0-4. A score of 4 in any skill area means the student has demonstrated mastery in the skill. A score of 0 means the student is not meeting the minimum standard in the skill area.

Parents and students are encouraged to treat the Employability Scores like academic grades. Reflect on how each score was earned, and recognize the strengths as well as the skills that can be improved. Parents can join teachers in reinforcing the importance of these skills now and in the future.

The Council Bluffs Community School District developed this research-based Employability Skills Rubric in line with best practices in grading and with Iowa 21st Century skill standards. It measures a separate set of skills than the grades for academic achievement and does not affect a student's grade point average (GPA), credit earned or class rank.

Area Law Enforcement Teams use Drug Dogs to Search Schools during Training Exercises

In the continuing collaboration between the Council Bluffs Community Schools and Council Bluffs Police Department to assure a safe and drug free environment in district middle and high schools, the Police Department conducted the first of several planned searches for illegal drugs, utilizing drug dogs from their department and those of other metro law enforcement agencies.  The searches were conducted at Kirn and Wilson Middle Schools today. As part of the search of the hallways and parking lots, students do not come into direct contact with the law enforcement team or the dogs. As expected, no drugs were found.

The Council Bluffs Community Schools agreed to have random searches in our schools as part of the drug dog team training. The schools are taking this opportunity to reinforce the message that drugs are illegal and will not be tolerated in our schools and community. The goals are to deter drug usage, to potentially find drug offenders and to create awareness on the topic of drug use and abuse in our community.Additional searches will be conducted prior to the end of the school year.

Collect the most toys, collect monetary or gift card donations, and log the most volunteer hours to win the traveling trophy for one year. This year, the event spearheaded by F.E.A. students, collected over 650 toys for the Toys for Tots Campaign beating the metro schools by 400 toys. Not only did they do well in the toy collection category, the CAP students and parents added over 20 hours of volunteer time to sorting the toys at the warehouse, and the TJHS band, choir, and orchestra performed at the Mid America Center during the distribution of the toys logging over 100 hours. Money and gift cards were also donated to help TJ secure the trophy. Congratulations Thomas Jefferson students and staff for the great job and generosity and making Christmas a joy for many students in the area.

Longfellow Hosts Lunar Family Night

Around 110 students and parents attended Longfellow’s Lunar Family Night on February 21st . Activities included a hands-on literacy station offering students and their family members an opportunity to write and illustrate their own Goodnight Moon story, then observe and construct a moon stage booklet. The final station used the children’s imaginations as they painted moon rocks! Music was heard as the creative juices flowed. Each child submitted a “passport” stamped after completing the different lunar stations and received a MOON PIE donated by Hy-Vee.
